Speak now, by Lucifer!

This is an HTML5 remake of a practical joke, inspired by Peter Answers - Virtual Tarot (original idea by "Wizard666")  that I actualised in Flash a few Halloweens back. If you know what you're doing, the effect is guaranteed to make your unsuspecting victim do a double take!

Ask your pet demon questions that only someone in the room would be able to answer -such as "who am I here with?", "what colour top is she/he wearing?", "what did he/she just say?" - and have the ouija board spell out the answers.

The fake instructions (i.e., the instructions that you explain to your victim)

  • Type out the question you want answered and hit enter.
  • Type out the summoning phrase, "speak now, by Lucifer", and hit enter.
  • Sit back while the demon answers the question, ostensibly demonstrating knowledge that could only be had by someone actually in the room with you.

The actual instructions

  • Type out the question you want answered and hit enter.
  • Hit the record key, which has been set to the ] (right square bracket) key. (Onscreen, the first letter of the summoning phrase - i.e., s - will appear as if you had simply begun typing out the summoning phrase.)
  • Type in the answer to your question. (Onscreen, the summoning phrase will continue to appear as if you are typing it.)
  • When finished typing in the answer, hit the right square bracket key again to stop recording the answer. (Onscreen, it will continue to appear as if you are simply typing out the summoning phrase.)
  • Finish typing out the summoning phrase. (Actually, it won't matter what keys you hit at this stage: the summoning phrase will continue to be typed onscreen.)
  • Hit enter.
  • Sit back while the answer to the question (that you secretly typed in) is displayed.
  • If you do type out the summoning phrase (i.e., without recording an answer), a random I-won't-answer-you message will be displayed.

Play it up!

Start off with some simple yes/no questions so that your victim will think that little more than a magic-eight-ball-type app is being dealt with. Gradually move on to more complex questions so that your victim is still able to put the answers down to coincidence for a while. Finally ask very specific questions (shoelace colour, for example).

Anyway, enjoy! If you actually want to use this as a prank, you might want a link to a page without the above explanation attached: here.)

The app uses the HTML5 Audio API, so it requires a browser that supports this - a Webkit based browser, such as Chrome or Safari, is recommended.
